Alfredo Chavez Alvarez

 Alfredo "Pichi" Chavez Alvarez, 88, lifelong Deming resident went with the Lord Friday September 21, 2018 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Visitation will be Tuesday afternoon, September 25, 2018 from 5 to 6 at Baca’s Funeral Chapel where a rosary will begin at 6 o’clock led by Eddie Diaz.  Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at 10 o’clock in the morning at St. Ann Catholic Church with Fr. Josh Duplissey officiating.  Concluding services with veteran honors will follow at Mt. View Cemetery.

Alfredo was born January 10, 1930 to Mamie Manuela Chavez and Leon Williams Alvarez in Deming, attended Deming Public Schools and was a faithful communicant at Saint Ann’s Catholic Church.  He served his country honorably in the United States Army and was especially proud of being an 82nd Airborne Ranger.  Following service in the Army he served in the New Mexico National Guard until 1953.  On November 18, 1951 he married Margaret Jimenez at Saint Ann’s Catholic Church in Deming.  He retired from Safeway/Furr’s Supermarket after many years as the Produce Manager. He enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Rio Mimbres Country Club Association.  Family was first for him and he was considered the Patriarch, ‘Rock’, of the family. He took great pride in his home, both in and out, and enjoyed dancing with his daughters. He enjoyed the family gatherings always looking forward to a good game with his brothers and family in the pool room. His other loves were bowling, fishing, hunting and traveling with family.                                                                

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Margaret J. Alvarez of the home; daughter, Catherine Sera and husband Charles of Deming; sister, Annie Maynes of Deming; 3 brothers, Charlie Alvarez and wife Olga of San Antonio, TX, Sammy Alvarez and wife Sally of Deming; Benji Alvarez and wife Kathy of Albuquerque; 6 grandchildren, Carl Sera, Steven Sera, Andrea F. Sera, Kristen Reyes and husband Scot, Skyler Turner and Nathan Turner; 8 great-grandchildren, Anarika Gallosa, Zackarie Sera, Elijah and Jakob Sera, Julian and Aaron Reyes, Leilani Sera, Oliver Turner; numerous loving nieces and nephews.

Alfredo was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Mamie Alvarez; daughters, infant Elizabeth Ann and Deborah Alvarez Turner; brothers, Simon and Mike Alvarez.

Serving as pallbearers are Scot Reyes, Zackarie Sera, Elijah Sera, Jakob Sera, Skyler and Nathan Turner. Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Alvarez, John Alvarez, Bob Alvarez, Joe Morales, Matt Turner and Larry DeBerard.
