Manuel Q. Portillo, 70 of Bayard, NM passed away Sunday, October 13, 2019 at his home surrounded by his family.
Visitation will be from 5 to 6 pm on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at Baca’s Funeral Chapels. The Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 6pm. The Funeral Liturgy will be at 12:30 pm on Thursday, October 17, 2019 at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Bayard with Father Martin Okonkwo, officiating. Concluding services and burial will follow at Fort Bayard National Cemetery. Serving all pallbearers will be Jesus Alvillar, Thomas Portillo, Gabriel Martinez, Anthony Steyskal, Thomas Trey Portillo, and Michael Aguirre.
Manuel was born October 26, 1948 in Santa Rita, NM to Mauricio and Refugia (Quezada) Portillo. He had served his county honorably in the United States Army during the Viet Nam Conflict and returned to his home and worked as a diesel mechanic at Kennecott Copper Mines. Upon retiring he worked as a plumber service the surrounding areas. Manuel enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping. He was an avid movie buff and enjoyed watching Green Bay Packer football. His greatest pastime though was spending time with his children and grandchildren. Manuel will defiantly be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Manuel is survived by his wife Margaret; one son, Thomas Portillo of Lawton, OK; five daughters, Darlene Portillo of Bayard, Bernadette Alvillar (Jesus) of Bayard, Valerie Gomez of Bayard, Christina Apauty of Lawton, OK, and Julie Mares (Chris) of Las Vegas, NV; two brothers, Alfred Portillo (Angie) of Silver City, and Ruben Portillo (Mary Ann) of Silver City. Four sisters, Della Baca (Jimmy) of Hurley, Lupe Cox (Bill) of Arenas Valley, Sylvia Sierra of Silver City and Mary Sepulveda of Silver City. Also surviving Manuel are 19 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mauricio and Refugia, a son Manolito Portillo, two grandsons, Armando Gonzales Jr and Lawrence Grijalva III and a sister, Cecilia Portillo.
