Maria Sundt

Maria El Sundt (December 31, 1947 - January 7, 2019)

Beloved Christian, Wife, mother, sister, Grandmother, friend, companion, and inspiration. Maria was born and raised in Raton, New Mexico in 1947.  She grew up a devoted Catholic and carried her Christian morals, learned from an early age, with her throughout her life.  She married Charles Sundt in the spring of 1968 and gave birth to 2 boys Clint (1969) and Casey (1971).  When the family unit was young and adventurous, they moved to the wild and open Montana.  An avid lover of animals and the outdoors, Maria, or known to her good friends as El, spent most of her time enjoying the outdoors, nature, fishing, camping, skiing, riding horses, hiking, and hugging on her dogs, cats, children and husband.  

While rural Montana was fun for the young family, El knew it was not the best place for her boys to grow into men.  Above all, she took charge of making sure her boys future always came first.  The family moved to the town of Bozeman and quickly adapted to the beautiful place El had picked for her family.  She loved to decorate or the holidays, and always made sure the fridge was stocked with food and the love of family was felt.

Once both boys had been successfully raised, Chuck and El moved back to their beloved New Mexico.  Even though she was not in the same state as her boys, her guidance and influence was never far from them.   Chuck and El settled in Silver City and spent the next 30 plus years enjoying the place they chose to live out their retirement years.  While retirement was the plan, it was anything but boring.  El decided to return to college and continued her education path by graduating with her Bachelors Degree in social work.  Very fitting for a woman so gifted that she chose an education that focused on giving back. She always put forth her best foot for others, most of the time putting herself second.  That was who she was and will be remembered as, a woman who chose to make sure all her loved once came first.   

Maria El Sundt leaves behind her husband of 50 years, Charles; two boys, Clint (married to  Nicole), Casey (married to Katie); her brother, Joe (married to Lucy) and their two sons; also surviving her are a combined 6 grandchildren with her first great granddaughter due in June. Her grandson, Christian, of the family home, was her right hand in her final years. 

She will be missed terribly.

Cremation has been entrusted to Baca’s Funeral Chapels.  No services have been scheduled at this time.
