Phillip Merryweather Obituary

Phillip Harlan Merryweather, 68, bravely lost his difficult and valiant battle against liver cancer on October 27, 2018.  Born in Omaha, NB, Phil went to elementary school in Valley, and graduated from high school in Norfolk, NB.  Phil earned his first degree in Zoology from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.  His next degree was in Nursing from the University of Arizona in Tucson.  It was while he was working as an emergency room nurse in Show Low, AZ, that he was introduced to Silver City.  It was his forever dream to live his retirement life in Silver City.  Phil eventually moved to Birmingham, AL to attend the physician/surgeon assistant program at the University of Alabama in Birmingham Hospital.  After many years, Phil retired as a PA/SA in the Kidney Transplant Department in the UAB Hospital.  Two years later, Phil was living his dream in Silver City!  Phil enjoyed being a member in The Rolling Stones Club, the Silver City 49’ers Club and especially his membership in the Moose Lodge of Silver City.  Phil was a great man with the distinctive qualities of loyalty and honesty.  He followed through on every promise and commitment. Phil had a quick wit, loved parties and was passionate about life.  Phil loved to camp, especially in the Nantahala National Forest in NC and the Sacramento Mountains of NM.  He camped with Barbara and friends across the SE and SW in any kind of weather.  He could be found hiking, canoeing or shooting the white water rapids.  Phil loved rivers, lakes and beaches.  Phil was also a devoted NASCAR and football fan, attending both across the USA.  He also loved shows, musicals, plays and different kinds of theater acts.

Phil is survived by his beloved and adored wife, Barbara, and her son Robert Hill (Kathryn).  Phil couldn’t have loved Robert any more than if Robert had been his own son.  Phil and Barbara were absolutely delighted to attend Robert and Kathryn’s beautiful wedding this May in Birmingham, AL.  Phil is also survived by his two dearly loved nieces, Cindy Buesing in Lincoln, NB and Sally Harvey (Chris) in Phoenix, AZ.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Harlan and Irene Merryweather, and his older brother Jack and sister, Nancy.  Phil is already missed immensely by his family, many friends and co-workers.

A celebration service of his life will be held in Silver City, announced at a later date.  There will be another celebration service to be held in Birmingham, AL, again to be announced a later date.  Cremation took place at the Baca’s Funeral Chapels in Silver City.

Phil’s family would like to thank everyone associated with the Baca’s Funeral Home for their professional, loving and respectful handling of Phil’s death.  Everything was so dignified, truly representing our beloved, Phil Merryweather.
