Ruth Allison Brown

Ruth A. Brown, 91, former Deming resident passed away Friday January 4, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Assisted Living in Las Cruces.

Memorial service will be Wednesday morning January 16, 2019 at 11 o’clock at Morning Star Methodist Church, 2941 Morning Star Drive in Las Cruces.  Pastor Ross Whiteaker will officiate.  Following the service, a reception will be held in the fellowship hall.  A committal service is scheduled for 3 o’clock that afternoon at Mountain View Cemetery in Deming. 

Ruth Allison Brown was born in Cedar Hill, Texas on October 20, 1927.  She grew up in Quemado, New Mexico where her family homesteaded.  She obtained a Bachelor’s degree from New Mexico State Teacher’s College and a Master’s degree from NMSU.  She taught school for 33 years in New Mexico (Walker Air Force Base, Las Cruces, Socorro and Deming). 

After her retirement from teaching, Ruth volunteered at the Deming Luna Mimbres Museum for many years serving as a tour guide and director of the museum.  While Ruth was director, the museum expanded to include a remodeled Mimbres pottery room, the restoration of the Custom House, a new Cowboy exhibit, a Hispanic Room and a new Military Room dedicated to those who served in the military.  Ruth was honored with the distinction of Citizen of the Year twice and Tourism Person of the Year for her hard work at the Deming museum.  

Ruth was married to Roy Brown who preceded her in death.  She is survived by her sister, Betty Ferm, her daughter, Ruth Ann Ayers, her grandkids, Russell Ayers and Melissa Hildebrandt as well as her great grandsons, Colin Hildebrandt and Austin Hildebrandt.

Ruth loved writing, creating artwork, reading, knitting, trying out new recipes, spending time with family, learning about history and participating in the Historical Society. She authored two books entitled Deming Luna Mimbres Museum and Quemado New Mexico: 250 friendly people and a few old crabs.   

She loved life, made the most of it, she was extremely generous with her time and her love. She is treasured by her family and will be greatly missed by them.
