He enlisted in the U.S. Navy six months later at the age of 17 and completed his basic training in San Diego after which he served first on the U.S.S. Wasp and later he had the privilege of serving as a member of the commissioning crew on the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk CVS-63. He was a member of the Kitty Hawk Veterans Association and a plankholder. After being honorably discharged in 1962 from the U.S. Navy, Terry returned to South Dakota and began his college career at Northern State College. In June, 1963, he married Barbara Cowie. In August, 1966, Terry graduated from Northern State College in Aberdeen, South Dakota with a degree in Social Studies Education. In May, 1964, their son, Scott, was born in Aberdeen, SD. Having enjoyed the southwest and its warmth while in basic training in San Diego, Terry applied for and accepted a teaching job at Deming High School in 1966.

With wife and their toddler son in tow, they settled in Deming where they have made home since. In December, 1967, their second son, Sean, was born and in 1968 while teaching, he obtained his Masters of Education from Western New Mexico University in Silver City, NM.

Terry retired from Deming Public Schools in 1992 after 26 years of service. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, traveling with them to historical sites in 49 of the 50 states and visiting with family in various parts of the country.
