Terrence Pekron Obituary

Terrence K. Pekron, age 76 and 11 months, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2018 with his family by his side.

Terry was born on April 15, 1941 to Alphonse and Clara (Block) Pekron in Chicago, Illinois. At age 4, his family moved to Waubay, South Dakota where his parents ran Pekron's Waubay Cafe later in life. Terry graduated from Waubay High School in 1958. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy six months later at the age of 17 and completed his basic training in San Diego after which he served first on the U.S.S. Wasp and later he had the privilege of serving as a member of the commissioning crew on the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk CVS-63. He was a member of the Kitty Hawk Veterans Association and a plankholder. After being honorably discharged in 1962 from the U.S. Navy, Terry returned to South Dakota and began his college career at Northern State College. In June, 1963, he married Barbara Cowie. In August, 1966, Terry graduated from Northern State College in Aberdeen, South Dakota with a degree in Social Studies Education. In May, 1964, their son, Scott, was born in Aberdeen, SD. Having enjoyed the southwest and its warmth while in basic training in San Diego, Terry applied for and accepted a teaching job at Deming High School in 1966.

With wife and their toddler son in tow, they settled in Deming where they have made home since. In December, 1967, their second son, Sean, was born and in 1968 while teaching, he obtained his Masters of Education from Western New Mexico University in Silver City, NM.

Terry retired from Deming Public Schools in 1992 after 26 years of service. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, traveling with them to historical sites in 49 of the 50 states and visiting with family in various parts of the country. Terry also enjoyed reading, hunting, music, and the southwest. Terry is survived by his wife Barbara of the home; son Sean and wife Gwynne, grandchildren Kensley, Kellen, Kerris, and Kemper of Woodland Park, Colorado; grandson Tristan Pekron of Deming; granddaughter Hali Duran and husband Gabriel, great-grandson River Duran of Deming; sisters Betty Pheifer of Owatonna, Minnesota, and Judy (Bill) Ackerman of Mesa, Arizona; brother-in-law Keith Cowie and wife Kathy Quinn of Cheyenne, WY; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alphonse and Clara (Block) Pekron; son, Scott Pekron; and nephew, Tim Oakley.

The family would like to invite you to attend a celebration of his life at a come-and-go reception on Saturday, March 24, 2018 from 1:30pm-3:30pm at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Deming.
