Wayne Shellhorn

January 18, 1954 ~ June 10, 2018 (age 64)

SHELLHORN: Wayne E. Shellhorn, 64, a lifelong resident of Glenwood NM, passed away Sunday, June 10, 2018, at 6 Bar Ranch near Glenwood. He passed as a result of a ranching accident, but ranching was what he loved most.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 in the morning at the Glenwood Park in Glenwood with Glen Stailey officiating. Interment will follow at the Glenwood Cemetery.

He was born Jan. 8, 1954, in Silver City, to Charles E. (Junior) and Lena K. Shellhorn. He graduated from Reserve High School in 1972, where he was a member of the 1st place State AA Basketball Championship team marking the first state title for Reserve High School. He also excelled in pole vaulting and was quarterback of the football team. He attended New Mexico State University. He was employed as a firefighter for the U.S. Forest Service - Negrito Hotshots from 1974-1977 and from 1985-1991. He was a life-long rancher and is widely known for operating the Glenwood Tavern. One of the biggest and brightest personas of Catron County, patrons often made special trips to the Tavern just to converse with Wayne. He was also a lifetime member of the Glenwood Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife Cindy Shellhorn; his sons, Bradd and Wyatt Shellhorn (wife Micheon); his mother, Lena Shellhorn of Glenwood; his sister, Yolanda O’Connell of Tyrone;his niece, Kristen O’Connell Corso (husband Joseph) of Los Angeles; his two grandsons, Braden Shellhorn and brother Jack Klein, plus many cousins and hundreds of friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles (Junior) Shellhorn and brother, Auggie Shellhorn.

Wayne enjoyed entertaining and telling stories, ranching, irrigating and farming, playing solitaire, reading the newspaper cover to cover, sudoku puzzles, horse racing, and dancing. He was a devoted son and took great care of his mother, Lena, always by her side; often taking her to town and the casino. One of his greatest joys was being a grandfather.

Pallbearers will be Bradd Shellhorn, Wyatt Shellhorn, Danny Montoya, Steven McMahon, Gusty Faust, Hugh Faust, Gerry Jameson and Beau Bruton.

Honorary  Pallbearers are Darrell Allred, Steve Aguirre Sr., Perry Atwood, Mike Bailey, Michael Birmingham, John Baumberger, Billy Burns, Greg Collins, Ray Crum, Stanley Elkins, Tim Estrada,Herman Gutierrez, Samuel Gutierrez,  Johnny Hatch, Baron Hiedenreich, Gary Jones, Wilson Kelly, Charlie Kiehne, Travis Kiehne, Jerry Ledesma, Eddie Luera, Jesus Martinez, Jim Mater, Dave Munsick, Toby Richards, Todd Richards, Ricky Roberts, Howard Simons, Greg Sopyn, Lee Spooner, Kyle Spurgeon, Dean Spurgeon, Glen Stailey, Max Lee Trujillo, Lawrence Trujillo, and Marea Williams.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Wayne Shellhorn’s name may be made to Reserve High School in care of P.O. Box 350, Reserve, NM, or The Glenwood Community Presbyterian Church.
