Ascension “A.C.” “Chon” Manzano (1946-2024), was a man of few words, with an enduring love for his family and community. He was born on March 5, 1946 to Inez and Elijio Manzano in Hurley, NM. He was the youngest of four children, often known for his adventurous spirit as a child. Chon devoted his life to public service, serving his country in the Army Reserves, and as a police officer for the duration of his career. He was elected Grant County Sheriff, and later became Chief of Police in Bayard where he served his community with compassion and conviction. He was the recipient of the Law Enforcement Purple Heart, for his sacrifice and selfless service.
While being a police officer was a major part of his life, Chon was most proud to carry the titles of Husband, Dad and Grandpa. Chon married the love of his life, Yolanda Manzano on November 22, 1969. If you saw Chon, most likely Yoli was right by his side—for the past 54 years. Their love was unconditional and an example of true devotion. They had five amazing children together, Yvonne Manzano (husband Ray), David Manzano (wife Dana), Betsy Palacios (husband James), Daniel Manzano (wife Alicia) and Kenny Manzano as well as countless foster children. He cherished every moment he spent with his kids and shared a unique and beautiful relationship with each of them. Chon held a special place in his heart for his grandkids. Grandpa assigned them each a nickname and he loved to poke fun at them for a little laugh. Kayla, Kieri, Ben, Vicky, Amaya, Gabriel, Davianna, Aliana, and Sebastian loved to take Grandpa fishing, make him laugh and on occasion get him to dance and play whatever game they were roping him into. Chon spent his final days surrounded by family. He leaves behind his wife, kids, grandkids, sister Maxine Gardner and brother Elijio “Lico” Manzano, numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Greeting him in heaven, were his parents Inez and Elijio Manzano, sister Rachel Gulick and father-in-law Ben Altamirano. His fierce loyalty, steady presence and profound love for his beloved Yoli and family will always be remembered.
