Obituary

Dorothy E. Kupke, 96, of Tyrone passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at her home surrounded by her family.

Dorothy was born August 6, 1925 in Chicago, Ill. to Clarence and Hazel Miller.  She is survived by her husband Bill; sister, Marilyn Arnt of Sun City West, Arizona, and a brother John Miller of Columbus, Ohio.  Dorothy was educated in the Chicago School System and has a Bachelors Degree in Dress Design from the Art Institute of Chicago.  Her first job was selling White Sewing Machines from Carson Pirie Scott’s Loop Department Store.

In 1950 her parents moved to the western suburb of Elmhurst and Dorothy went to work as a teller in the Hinsdale, Illinois Saving and Loan Assn.  There she met Bill when he came to work there in 1958.  They were married in 1960 and both changed jobs to Naperville.  Bill worked for the Naperville Saving and Loan Assn. and Dorothy went to work for Moser Lumber Company as a bookkeeper.  Moser Lumber was the largest developer of the suburb at the time Dorothy worked for Moser 15 years while the town grew some 50,000 people.  In 1963 Bill and Dorothy took a trip to the southwest visiting Silver City   which still had a lot of gravel streets.  They liked the place and subscribed to the weekly Enterprise.

In 1975 they both retired from their jobs in Illinois and moved to Silver City having purchased a Mobile Home Court on Market Street which they remodeled and called "STAGESTOP",.   They owned, lived in, and maintained it for 20 years.  In 1994 they sold out and moved to Tyrone in one of the houses Phelps Dodge built in 1968.

They had no children but kept an RV busy every month of the year following western history leads.  Meanwhile many of their relatives moved to the Phoenix area, for a while eight such relatives from both sides of the marriage were in Arizona.  But Bill still had Kupke relatives in North West Indiana as well as a 260-acre farm there.  All this plus an interest in Indian War history drove their RV’s 200,000 mile in some 53 years.

Both Bill and Dorothy became charter members of the Fort Bayard Historical Society in its inception in 1990 and Dorothy was the Corp Secretary of Record.

Cremation will take place and a time to visit will be from 3 to 7 pm on Friday, April 22, 2022 at Baca's Funeral Chapels.  A Celebration of Dorothy's life will be held at Baca’s Funeral Chapels on Friday, April 22, 2022 at 7:00 PM.  Memorials may be sent to Fort Bayard Historical Society at PO Box 14, Silver City, New Mexico  88062
