Elijio C. Manzano Obituary Elijio Carmona Manzano, widely known as Lico, passed away on September 6, 2024, in Deming, New Mexico.
Born July 29, 1937 in North Hurley, New Mexico he was devoted to his family. Lico was a man of deep faith and commitment, reflect in his dedication to his family and his service at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Bayard, New Mexico. He was a quiet, reserved individual, characterized by his hardworking and faithful nature. He served honorably in the United States Army as a Sergeant from 1960 to 1962, followed by 15 years in the Army Reserve from 1962-1977. His military service was a proud chapter in his life, showcasing his dedication and resilience. Lico’s professional life was marked by over three decades at Kennecott Copper and Phelps Dodge, where he began as a laborer in 1966 and later became a Maintenance Planner in 1972. His career also took him to Chile, where he worked in the Candelaria Mine in the Atacama Region. Upon retiring, he fulfilled a childhood goal of establishing his own business from his youth working at A & B Store in North Hurley, New Mexico. This experience and goal became fulfilled by his business, Manzano’s R.V. Park in Arenas Valley, New Mexico, a successful business that ran for 21 years. As an alumnus of Western New Mexico University, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration on May 28, 1971 and a Minor in Economics. His education played a pivotal role in his professional achievements and personal development. Lico’s life was enriched by his passions for cars, camping with his family, gardening and live music. He loved spending time outdoors with his family and was always surrounded by music at home.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 59 years, Virginia “Ginnie” R. Manzano; sons, Edward Manuel Manzano (Mindy) and Victorio R. Manzano; grandsons Nathaniel Manuel Manzano (Karina) and Alejandro Elijio Manzano (Monica); sister, Maxine Gardner and great granddaughter Isabelle Jean Manzano. Lico was preceded in death by his parents, Elijio and Inez Manzano; sister, Rachel Manzano; brother, Asension “AC Chon” Manzano; in-laws Victorio and Hermina Rodriguez as well as his beloved pet dog, Prissy.
Visitation for Lico will be on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will follow at 11:00 am. The Funeral Liturgy will follow immediately thereafter. The Rite of Committal and interment will be at 1:00 pm at Fort Bayard National Cemetery with full military honors accorded. Officiating will be Father Martin Okonkwo. Serving as pallbearers will be Edward Manzano, Victorio Manzano, Nathaniel Manzano, Alejandro Manzano, David Manzano and Samuel Edward Rodriguez.
A Fellowship will follow afterwards at Our Lady of Fatima Parish Hall. Lico’s life and legacy will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him
