Frankie “Pancho” Gonzalez Medina
Pancho, as he was affectionately known to many, entered eternal rest on July 20, 2024, in El Paso, Texas. He was a devoted family man, always humble and putting others before himself.
He was born on January 29, 1941, to Soledad Medina in Santa Rita, New Mexico, in what was known as El Cañon where he loved growing up. He was a 1962 graduate of Cobre High School. He served in the US Navy. He worked for Asarco and retired from Phelps Dodge. He played baseball since his youth and continued playing with the miners as an adult.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Charlotte Torres Medina, his children: Yvonne Gomez and spouse Frank Gomez, whom he loved like a son; son Randy Medina; and son Jason Medina. His grandchildren: Jasmine Soto, Jenisha “Nish” (Ben) Mermis of Japan, Frankie Gomez Jr., Jaden (Eileen) Gomez of Alaska, Fabian (Ruth) Gomez, and Randy Medina, Jr.; his great-grandchildren: Jaydrianna Marquez, Nehemiah Mermis, Ezra Mermis, Jenaysiah Soto, Noah Sedillos Gomez, and unborn grandson Elijah Gomez.
He is also survived by his siblings: brother Steve (Marion) Medina; sisters Lillian, Mary (Willie) Montes, Helen (Ron) Morris, and Annie Medina; sister-in-law Connie Medina; brothers and sisters-in-law Robert and Patsy Sosaya, Fortune, Alex (Irma) Torres, Margaret Cordova, Lorraine (Eloy) Muniz, Ernie (Tonette) Torres, Andy Torres, David Torres, as well as many nephews and nieces whom he adored. He is also survived by many brothers and sisters of the congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
He was preceded in death by his mother Soledad; siblings Lorenzo, Manuel, Eloy, and Bobby Medina; and his in-laws Fortunato and Fabiola Torres.
He loved striking up conversations and meeting people, often talking to them about the Bible, world news, or just to ask about their families (chances were he knew who they were) He was a stranger to no one.
He was an avid Cobre Indians fan, attending many games with his wife, they loved watching Lobos basketball and studying the Bible. He loved watching Western movies with his son, enjoyed camping, piñon picking, and found joy in picking fresh fruit right off the tree. He loved going fishing with his grandsons, with a stop for tamales and root beer sodas for their trip. He enjoyed listening to old country music with his son-in-law. He could also be found walking the Cobre track every evening.
It is through his faith in Jehovah that we find comfort in our loss.
A memorial service will be held at Baca’s Funeral Chapel on Friday, August 2, 2024, at 2:00 pm with Brother Sam Hernandez officiating. Interment will follow at a later date.
