Gregory "Smokey" Scott Burris

Gregory “Smokey” Scott Burris, 63, a resident of Mayhill, NM passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2023 at Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center in Alamogordo.

A viewing will be held Tuesday, May 23, 2023 from 5 to 7 o’clock in the evening at Baca’s Funeral Chapel in Deming. Visitation will be held the following day from 10 to 11 o’clock in the morning with the funeral service to take place at 11 led by Pastor Jeff Sutton. Smokey will then be laid to rest at Mountain View Cemetery in Deming.

“Smokey” as he was fondly known as was born June 29, 1959 in Omaha, NE to Jackie Lee and Mary (Still) Burris. Smokey was an RN for 32 years and dedicated his life to caring for others after a tragedy in his life. He loved his family and friends dearly. Smokey enjoyed good food and cooking, traveling, riding his Harley, and taking care of his animals. Those who met him will never forget him. He was full of life and always had an opinion.

He is survived by his loving wife, Tamara Burris of the home; his mother, Mary Burris; a daughter, Ashley (Ryan) Bochnowski and their children, Ivy and Owen Bochnowski; his stepdaughter, Chantel (Carlos) Jaquez and their children, Adryana, Aiden and Carly Jaquez; a brother, Jerry (Trisha) Burris and their children, Jacquelyn, Destinie, Grace, Sierra and Ben; 3 stepbrothers, Vince, Mark and Pete Burris; his best friends of 50 years, Rick and Debbie Cotham, as well as his great nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, many extended family and friends. Smokey was preceded in death by his father Jack Burris; a brother Patrick Burris; also, his first wife Diane Burris.

Pallbearers will serve as Gerald Burris, Rick Cotham, Ryan Bochnowski, Orlando Gomez, Carlos, and Aiden Jaquez.
