Hilario Talavera Obituary

Hilario E. “Lalo” Talavera, 83, a lifelong resident of Lordsburg, passed away peacefully Sunday, January 3, 2021 in the comfort of his home with his family by his side.

Visitation will be Monday January 11, 2021 at 10 o’ clock in the morning at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church followed by rosary to be led by Gloria Vargas. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 o clock with father Bartholomew Ezenwelem officiating. Concluding services and interment will follow at Shakespeare Cemetery.

Lalo was born January 20, 1937 to Hilario V. and Carmen Estrada Talavera and was raised by his grandma Maria V. Talavera in Lordsburg. He graduated from Lordsburg High School with the class of 1956. On November 30, 1957 he married his high school sweetheart Ramona “Monie” Villanueava. Lalo was initially a butcher by trade and worked at Foodliner for many years. He later went to work for Phelps Dodge Mining Corporation as a truck driver for 19 years. Lalo enjoyed the outdoors and liked hunting, fishing, going on picnics with his family and cutting wood. He was also well known in the community for being a mentor to many in the community. Anyone who knew Lalo, knew music was his passion and playing the guitar came naturally to him. He was a member of the St Joseph’s Catholic Church where he was a guitarist for the choir for many years. He was also an avid Dallas Cowboy fan.

He is survived by his wife Ramona “Monie” Talavera of Lordsburg; daughters, Rebecca T. Artiaga and Norma T. Barrio of Lordsburg; sister Nina Hood of Lordsburg; two grandchildren, Vincent and Lorena; five great grandchildren, Roman, Isaac, Isabella, Jordan, and Matthew; three half sisters, Melinda Brown, Rosanna Ortega, and Josie Talavera. Lalo is preceded in death by his sister Rachel Mestas, his favorite son in law Arnulfo “Nuco” Artiaga, and his half brother Jo Jo Figueora.

Pallbearers will be Vincent Barrio, Lorena Artiaga, Roman and Isaac Murillo, Dena Lopez, and Gabriel Crothers. Honorary pallbearers are his Compadres, 35 godchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and his many good friends.
