Jose H. Vasquez

Jose Vasquez passed away peacefully at the Silver Care Center in Silver City, NM just 3 days after his 87th birthday.

He was born in Camargo, Chihuahua, Mexico on March 25, 1933. The tenth son of Daniel Vasquez and Francisca Holguin, he took over raising his younger brother Luis when both parents passed away. They were only 9 & 7, respectively. As they grew up, they took jobs taking care of sheep and cows for various ranches in the region. At age 17, Jose became a blaster in an underground mine in a small town in the mountains named San Francisco del Oro. His life completely changed when he met the love of his life Ramona Duarte at the company store. They married on Sept 11, 1955 and had their only child Leticia (his Guera). He received a letter of employment from a mine in the United States and with that he arranged for a residency permit for him, his wife and daughter. Later he arranged employment for his brother, Luis and he too got his residency permit and brought his family to the USA.  They settled in Grant County and worked in the local mines. Jose Vasquez also nicknamed Chino, lived life to the fullest. He loved dancing, taking family and friends on picnics and camping and most of all, traveling with his wife, daughter and friends in his green truck and camper of which he was very proud. They traveled to many beautiful places in Mexico and made many friends along the way. He was a huge fan of Fernando Valenzuela. They became friends. They followed him to Mexico and Dodger baseball games and even went to his house.

After his retirement, they moved to Mazatlan where they enjoyed the beach life. There, they hosted friends from the states all the time. As they got older they moved back to Silver City to be near their daughter and family. Sadly Jose developed the dreaded disease of dementia and lived the last six years of his life at the Silver City Care Center. Ramona visited every single day until her passing 2 years ago. His daughter was his loving advocate and at his side until it was his time to leave this earth and reunite with the love of his life

Jose is survived by his daughter Leticia Obar, son in law Robert of Silver City; his only grandson, Bobby Obar and his wife, Susan and his two great-grandson’s, Robert IV and  Jacob, all of Mesa, Arizona. His only surviving brother Francisco Vasquez, of Juarez, and many nieces and nephews from all over North America, for all of which he had nicknames and all loved him very much, including, Godchildren and many friends.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Ramona, most of his brothers, all of his sisters and many other family members. 

Jose was a generous man with a big heart that was always ready to help everyone.  He will be greatly missed.
