Juanita Roman Reyes

Juanita Roman Reyes, 87, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on Saturday, May 13, 2023, in Deming, NM.

Juanita was born on January 27, 1936, to Lazaro Roman and Francisca Ortega in Villa Ignacio Ramirez, Durango, Mexico. She was adopted at birth by Antonio Rodriguez and Candelaria Hernandez who raised her with her Christian faith. At the age of 15, Juanita would move back with her biological parents and family after the death of her adoptive mother.

She arrived in Deming, NM in 1961 with her husband, Daniel Reyes and two children Rosa and Daniel Jr. Several months after arriving in Deming, she gave birth to her third child, Juan Antonio (Johnny) on July 4, 1962. Soon after Johnny’s birth, her and her husband and children returned to Mexico and stayed there seven years. In those seven years she gave birth to three more sons (Armando, Pablo (Paul) and Mario). Her and her husband and family returned to Deming in 1969 where she would continue to expand her family with three more children (David, Graciela & Christina). She would later own Juanita’s Place restaurant where she would be known for great food, specializing in menudo and gorditas. She loved Charlie the Wildcat and Deming HS sports and enjoyed watching her kids and grandkids play for the Wildcats. Juanita enjoyed meeting people and anyone she encountered; she made a friend. She was a great Christian woman, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a great friend. She will be greatly missed!

Juanita is survived by her husband Daniel Reyes and nine children; Rosa Holguin (Fernando), Danny Reyes (Teresa), Johnny Reyes (Martha), Armando Reyes (Nicole), Paul Reyes, Mario Reyes (Patricia), David Reyes (Julie), Gracie Lucero (Gilbert), Christy Villegas (Javier); twenty-five grandchildren and thirty-two great grandchildren.

Juanita is preceded in death by her parents Lazaro Roman and Francisca Ortega; brothers, Pedro, Alberto, and Benito Roman; sisters, Felicitas “Chita” Roman Martinez, Maria Roman Orona, Ana Maria “Anita” Roman Salas, (twin sister) Juanita Roman Hernandez, and grandson Paul Aaron Perez.

Visitation will begin Friday, May 19, 2023 from 4 to 5 o’clock in the afternoon at Baca’s Funeral Chapel (811 S. Gold Ave, Deming, NM 88030). Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be prayed in Juanita’s honor at 5 led by Maria De La Luz Reyes. A Celebration of Life Service will follow immediately after the rosary led by her son Paul Reyes. The Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at 10 o’clock in the morning at St. Ann’s Catholic Church (400 S. Ruby St, Deming, NM 88030) with the rite of committal and interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery (3410 E. Pine St, Deming, NM 88030).

Serving as Juanita’s pallbearers will be her six sons.
