Lucy M. Lopez
March 4, 1931 – July 4, 2019
Casimira Lucia “Lucy” M. Lopez finished her last job as a lady of leisure on July 4, 2019 after 24 years of official retirement. Lucy was born on March 4, 1931 in the scenic retreat of Redrock, New Mexico to Julian T. and Luisa G. Mendoza. Throughout her life Lucy was no push over, she learned how to politely speak her peace early on as one of eight children. If Lucy didn’t agree with you, there was little to no fuss, she simply said, “No thank you, and please be on your way.”
Most notably, she was a caring daughter, sister, mother and grandmother who took care of business. The early years on the family farm helped prepare her for life as she was no stranger to hard work and knowing what needed to be done. Lucy loved seeing her friends and family especially while working at City Hall and the Civic Center for 15 years prior to her retirement. She loved gathering her family for day trips to the river and near-by mountains. Recently, she loved to use the services of the Library, as she was an avid reader and virtual adventurer - she often traveled the world with the flip of a page. She also enjoyed visiting with friends and family as well as living vicariously through her novellas.
Lucy will be welcomed in eternal rest by her parents Julian and Luisa Mendoza, her brothers, Norberto, Daniel, Rey, Antonio, and sisters Petra Bevel and Ruth Diaz. The lone survivor of the Mendoza family is her handsome younger brother Joseph (Ester) Mendoza of El Paso, Texas.
Lucy married in 1953, and has three devoted children that she raised in the little white house on East 6th St.: Tommy Ray (Sylvia) Lopez, Louie M. (Joni) Lopez, and Veronica (Robert) Young. Lucy’s family continued to grow with her grandchildren: Sunny, Dena Rae, Nicolas, Denise, DJ, Adrian, Gabriel, Robbie, Tommy Ray Jr., Sarah, Julian, and Joseph. Her favorite grandkids were allowed to grab a Coca-Cola out of the fridge (for which there was always one) and occasionally run to the corner store with some spending money. Never mind that they also used to be able to buy her Lucky’s for her too. She often gave her 23 great-grandchildren nick names because let’s face it there are plenty of them: Karissa, Dee Dee, Adam, Ethan, Alejandro, Analisa, Kiki, David, Zoey, Nathan, Madison, Aaron, Brandon, Colin, Tatiana, Joseph, Natalie, Adrian Jr., Matthew, Aden, Noah, Eli, and Jazzlynn Ray. In addition, she will be missed by numerous nieces and nephews who all loved their Aunt Lucy.
Services to celebrate and honor Lucy will take place on Tuesday July 9, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with a rosary beginning at 8:30 led by Alice Ramirez. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 9:30 with Fr. Jude Okonkwo, Pastor officiating. Interment will follow at Shakespeare Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Joseph Patrick Lopez, Tommy Ray Lopez, Alejandro Villegas, Karissa Murillo, Nicolas Lopez, and Robby Young. Honorary bearers are all her great grandchildren.
