Mike L. Quarrell, 90, lifelong Deming resident passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 28, 2024 in Las Cruces, NM.
Mike was born September 23, 1934 in Deming, New Mexico to Mike Quarrell Sr. and Apolonia Lucero. On April 4, 1950 Mike enlisted into the United States Army and served his county honorably in The Korean Conflict. He served as a tank commander while in battle and he achieved the rank of Staff Sargent. Mike fought in one the bloodiest battles during the Korean Conflict, The Battle of Chosin Reservoir. He was wounded for the first time and was hospitalized for a few months and later returned to battle, then to get wounded once again. After his service Mike was awarded the Purple Heart Medal and Bronze Star Medal for his dedication and honorable service in battle. Once returning home Mike worked as a brick mason for many years and later became a building inspector for the State of New Mexico. Mike was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He spent a lot of time in mountains. On his spare time, he enjoyed tinkering with vehicles and was an amateur archeologist back in his younger days and enjoyed discovering Indian artifacts.
He is survived by his children, Eddie Romero, Daniel (Bernadette) Quarrell, Frank (Betty) Quarrell, Theresa Quarrell, Britton Scott Quarrell and Marissa Granadino; 2 brothers, Frank L. (Mary) Quarrell and James L. (Kathy) Quarrell; 9 grandchildren, Daniel, Eric, Makiah, Dani, Frankie Joe, Joel, Aaron, Jennifer, and Annastasia; as well as his 4 great-grandchildren, Desiree, Arianna, Olivia, and Logan.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents; his spouse, Marleen Quarrell; a son, Mike Quarrell; 3 brothers, Charlie, Louis, and Barney Quarrell; a sister, Paulette Quarrell and a grand-daughter, Bernadette Desiree Quarrell.
As per Mikes wishes cremation will take place and has been entrusted to Baca’s Mimbres Crematory.
