Montie Francis Speir, 71 years old, of Deming, New Mexico passed away peacefully on November 5th, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Montie was born on October 13th, 1953, in Deming, New Mexico, to Bill and Nadine Speir. He grew up on a farm in Luna County and formed many deep and meaningful lifelong friendships with those he met along the way. He always carried with him the values of optimism, endurance, patience, loyalty, family, and faith that shaped him throughout his life.
Montie spent most of his life as a farmer and rancher, working the dry land with a deep love and respect for nature. His dedication to the farm provided for his family and gave him great pride throughout his life. He was known for his strong work ethic, calm demeanor, sarcastic dad jokes, a strong faith in God, and an array of talents.
He was preceded in death by his parents Nadine and Bill Speir. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Rita Speir; children, Chip (Bernice) Speir and Jason Speir; grandchildren, Montiqua (Joram) Robbs, Julia (Red) Morris, Zak (Hannah) Speir, and Kason Speir; and great grandchildren, Montgomery Morris, Healan Robbs, Sloan Robbs, and a new baby on the way expected by Zak and Hannah. He is also survived by his sisters, Deon (Clinton) Woodward, Cheryl (Alan) Speir-Phillips, and numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, and outlaws! He was a loving husband, friend, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who took immense pride in his family, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Montie was a man who could always be counted on, whether for his sense of humor, a wise word, a helping hand, or a good laugh. He loved spending time with his family, and his grandchildren always looked forward to the stories he shared from his many years of trouble making. He was very active in the community, serving as president on the SWNM State Fair Board and Luna County Co-Op and as a member of the Farm Bureau Board, FSA committee and on the Soil Water and Conservation board. He held the title of kickball champion of the Speir family, holding back his skills for no-one! He also had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and could often be found driving around the farm, hiking in nature, searching for “treasures,” hunting and fishing with his sons, grandson, and friends, and watching every sunrise and sunset.
