NIEVES CARRILLO BARRIO, a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away
peacefully in Las Cruces NM on Sunday December 1, 2024 at the age of 93, a longtime resident of
Lordsburg NM.
Visitation will be Thursday morning, December 12, 2024 at 9 o’clock at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church
where the Holy Rosary will begin at 10 o’clock led by Elena Gandarilla. Mass of Christian Burial will
follow with Fr. Jude Okonkwo, Pastor officiating. Concluding services and interment will be at
Shakespeare Cemetery.
Nieves was born August 5, 1931 in CD, Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico to Vicente and Jacinta Jasso Carrillo.
In 1947 she married her beloved husband Eugenio Barrio, they were married for 68 yrs. They resided in
Lordsburg where they made their home and raised their family. Eugenio passed away in 2015. Nieves
worked as a housekeeper for many years with the Holiday and Bel Shore Motels in Lordsburg. She
enjoyed knitting and crochet and especially loved cooking and keeping holiday traditions. One of her
biggest joys was making salsa and homemade tortillas, making sure her loved ones always went home
with their share of love and homemade goodies. She was kind, compassionate and had a great spirit. She
touched the lives of everyone she met. Her memory lives in the hearts of her loved ones.
She is survived by her children; Margaret Belanger of Las Cruces, Maria Newell (George) of Lordsburg,
Jose A. Barrio (Frances) of Lordsburg, Oscar Barrio (Robyn) of Morenci, AZ,, and Diana Gandara
(Ronnie) of Glendale, AZ; she has 12 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Her husband Eugenio
“Chumbo” Barrio preceded her in death in 2015.
Pallbearers will be Thomas Belanger, George Newell, Vincent Barrio, RJ Gandara, Victor Barrio and
Isaiah Gandara. Honorary bearers are Ronnie Gandara, Gabriel Newell, Manuel “Mico” Alvarado,
Alfredo Alvarado, Arturo Diaz and Bobby Fajardo.
