Ramona Barela Baisa

Ramona Barela Baisa, longtime resident of Lordsburg, NM, entered eternal rest on Saturday, September 18, 2021, in the comfort of her home surrounded by her family.

The Holy Rosary will be recited by her nephew, Deacon Chris Georges at 10:30 A.M. Friday, September 24, 2021 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Lordsburg. A funeral mass will follow immediately, with Fr. Jude Okonkwo officiating. Interment will be at Shakespeare Catholic Cemetery following the mass. Serving as pallbearers are Vince Garcia, Andy Flores, Greg Drew, Clarky Smith, Adam Trujillo, and Scott Gandara. Honorary pallbearers are great-grandson Luke Trujillo, Freddie Barela, Mariano Barela, Jr., Patrick Barela, Joseph Barela, Ernie Barela, Randy Rodriguez, Jr., Danny Saucedo, Gilbert Saucedo, Raymond Saucedo, Jr., Dan Baisa, Rudy Marquez, Jr. and Gus Gandara, Jr.

Ramona was born on March 20, 1927 in Lordsburg, NM to Patricio Hidalgo Barela and Juana Lopez Barela. She is survived by her loving husband of 72 years, Clemente Baisa of the home, sons Ruben Baisa of Lordsburg/Roswell and Louie Baisa and wife Connie of Lordsburg, and daughter Irene Baisa also of Lordsburg. She is also survived by her sister, Manuela “Nellie” Barela Drew and her husband, John, of Goodyear, AZ., grandchildren Cheryl Garcia (R.T. Trujillo) of Clayton, NM, Victoria Baisa of Gilbert, AZ, Sonia Trujillo (Adam) of Lordsburg, Patricia Baisa of Las Cruces, NM, and Jeannette Leone of Sherman, TX. She is also survived by great-grandchildren Vince Garcia, Ashlyn Garcia, Eva Trujillo, Luke Trujillo, Gianna Washington, Nathan Bright, and Austin Bright. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Mariano Barela, Jose Jesus “Chuey” Barela, Angel Barela and sisters Patricia Barela Flores and Josephine Barela and nephews Vincent Drew and Sam Marquez.

Ramona lived with her family in Lordsburg until she was 10 years old then moved to Hachita, NM where her father had found work at the Hachita Mercantile. Later, she went to live in Lordsburg with her aunt Manuela Peralta and her cousins Lupe Rivera and Concha Saucedo to attend Lordsburg High School for her junior and senior years of high school. Her father wanted her to study and learn bookkeeping at LHS. She graduated from Lordsburg High School in 1946. On Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1948, she married the love of her life, Clemente Baisa. For about the next 30 years she did bookkeeping work for several small businesses in Lordsburg. In 1960, she began working at Miller Chevrolet as a bookkeeper for the next 17 years. She then worked for a federal program that serviced Lordsburg schools for a year. After that, she served several terms as Hidalgo County Treasurer and Deputy Treasurer, retiring in 1990.

In her spare time, she enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, reading the newspaper and magazines, watching professional tennis and sit-coms on television, with the Carol Burnette Show one of her favorites. She mostly enjoyed the company of her family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a devoted Catholic and spent much time praying.
