Ramona M. Barraza

Ramona (Nena) Barraza of Bayard, NM passed away peacefully at her home on October 14, 2020. She was 91. Nena, as her family and friends knew her, was born on July 28, 1929 to Roman and Cleofas Mesta in Santa Barbara, Chihuahua, Mexico. She grew up in Santa Maria Del Oro Durango where she met Ramon Barraza. They were married in 1946. In 1959, the couple and their five children moved to Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico and lived there for three years. In 1962, Nena, Ramon and six children immigrated to Bayard New Mexico where she lived until the time of her death.

Nena was a homemaker, a loving wife, and a devoted mother. Her big heart was not just committed to her husband and children, but also her extended family and beyond. She welcomed everyone into her home with open arms and made them part of her family. A generous heart, a welcoming home, and great cooking will be how we remember Nena. No one ever left her home hungry.

In addition to her family, Nena’s other passion was her faith; she was a devout Catholic and a lifelong member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Bayard, and the Guadalupana Society. Nena left a great legacy for her children, which was her Catholic faith.  

Nena is survived by her son Marco Barraza (Eva), 3 daughters, Bertha Espinosa, Lupe Barraza-Escarcega (Jose), Lucy Gurrola (Hector), a special Godson Luis Roacho (Elsa), many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Ramon Barraza who passed away in 2003, her son, Jose Ramon (Pepe) Barraza who passed in 2019, and most recently her daughter Martha Barraza who passed in March of this year.

Visitation will be on Wednesday evening, October 21, 2020 at 5 o’clock in the evening followed by a Rosary recited by Deacon Art Gutierrez at 6:00 p.m. at Baca’s Funeral Chapels.  Funeral mass will be on Thursday, October 22, 2020 at Our Lady of Fatima at 10 o’clock in the morning. Burial will follow the Funeral Mass at Hurley Cemetery. Officiating will be Father Martin Okonkwo. Serving as pallbearers will be:  Tony Barraza, Jose Escarcega, Hector Gurrola, Rocky Gurrola, Luis Roacho, and Luis Alfredo Roacho.
