Ronald Morris Darnell

Ronald Morris Darnell, 84, of Bayard, NM passed away May 25, 2021 at his home surrounded by his family. 

Ron was born June 22, 1936 in Eunice, NM to James and Jewel Darnell. Ron was very active in The Cobre Schools, serving over 30 years of service.  In those 30 years he was the 1971 New Mexico Football Coach of the Year, taking his Cobre football team all the way to being State Football Champions; He was also the New Mexico Track Coach of the Year in 1972; Ron was also a member of the New Mexico High School Coaches Association and a member of the Western New Mexico University Hall of Fame.  Aside from his dedication to Cobre High School he was a member of the Silver City Elks Club 413, The Moose Lodge and enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and camping. 

He is survived by his wife Maxine Darnell of 63 years; daughter, Terri Cervin and husband Phillip; two grandchildren, Brittany and Brooke Cervin, and her daughter Blakely; Brother-in-law, Dr. Jim and his wife Julie Patten; niece, Alicia and husband, Seth Williams; nephew, Scott Patten and wife, Heather; great-niece and nephew, Brock and Eva Patten. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Jewel Darnell; son, Brad Darnell and his mother and father-in-law, Vivian and LA Patten.

Funeral Services for Ron will at 10:00 am on Tuesday, June 1, 2021 at Baca’s Funeral Chapels.  Concluding service and burial will follow at Memory Lane Cemetery in Silver City.  Officiating will be Pastor Nancy Curtis.  Serving as casket bearers will be Mike Stone, Jack Smith, Carnie Foy, Richard Rodriguez, Bill Archibald and Ferol Baker.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Horizon Hospice or a charity of your choice.
