Steve Montes passed away peacefully at his home on February 1, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Steve was born in Silver City, New Mexico, to Luciano and Albina Montes. A proud Silver City native, he worked at Chino Mines in his early thirties before discovering a passion for technology. He earned his Associate of Science degree in Computer Network Technology and went on to serve his community through a career with Cobre Consolidated Schools.
Music was one of Steve’s greatest joys. He loved being a DJ and sharing his talents on the drums and saxophone as a member of The Illusion Band. Whether performing or practicing, music was always close to his heart. In his downtime, Steve could almost always be found watching football with his family—especially when the Pittsburgh Steelers were playing. His favorite matchups were against their rivals, the Dallas Cowboys, proudly cheering on his team while good-naturedly sparring with his wife, a devoted Cowboys fan.
Steve was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Albina Montes. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Barbara Montes; his children, Stephanie Montes (Matthew), Justine Trujillo (Mikey), and Isaac Montes (Brittany); his cherished granddaughter and pride and joy, Charlotte Montez; and his beloved Godchildren, Emmarie Heredia, Renee Baker, and Joaquin Trujillo.
Pallbearers will be his brothers, Chuggies Montes and EJ Montes; his cousins, Sammy Rodriguez, Julian Velasquez, and Jovan Torrez; and his close friend, Aaron Sapien. Honorary Pallbearers are Alfred Marufo, JJ Montes, Mikey Trujillo, Richard Dominguez, Anthony Romero, and Matthew Arellano.
Services will be held on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. at Harvest Church, located at 1500 North Hudson Street, Silver City, New Mexico 88064. Burial will follow at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Cemetery, 420 West Market Street, Silver City, New Mexico 88061. A Celebration of Life will follow and be accounted at the services.
Steve will be remembered for his love of family, music, laughter, and a good football rivalry. His spirit lives on in the many lives he touched, and he will be deeply missed.
