Virginia "Ginny" Robertson Obituary

A resident of Silver City, NM, Ginny entered eternal rest on July 16, 2025. She was born in Silver City on November 23, 1941, at Hillcrest General Hospital, to Hubert O. and May G. Robertson. Growing up in the country just outside of Silver City afforded her the pursuit of many outdoor activities. Early on, she developed an intense empathy for all living creatures, but especially horses and dogs. She also developed an interest in music, which became her life’s work and her passion for many years.  Over the years she had countless dogs and many horses, and she enjoyed riding in the hills around Silver City. As a young adult, she worked for an outfitter in Afton, WY, as a wrangler, packer, camp cook and entertainer for close to 20 summers. During those trips she would entertain campers singing old western favorites and other humorous songs, accompanied by her guitar.

After graduating from the University of Arizona, she taught music and other subjects at Vail Middle School in Tucson, AZ,  until she retired and returned to her home place in Silver City.  In Silver, she played piano and organ for the First United Methodist Church, and served as accompanist for local choral groups when she wasn’t singing with them.  People loved to hear her play, Malaguena!  Ginny discovered cowboy poetry and enjoyed reciting it for friends, family, and anyone who asked her.

She made friends easily, and people from all walks of life knew and loved her. She never married, having lost her true love to pancreatic cancer much too soon. Her dogs were her children!

Virginia is preceded in death by her parents and nephew, Kevin Monagle. Her surviving family include her brother Philip (Martha) Robertson of Red Lodge, MT; niece Rebecca Robertson Monagle, of Bend, OR; nephew Michael (Jill) Robertson; and great-niece Molly Robertson, great-nephew Jack Robertson, and sister-in-law, Jane Robertson of Carterville, IL. The family owes a debt of gratitude to Gigi Ellis and the other caregivers at Aging with Compassion for their loving care of Virginia in her later years.

A memorial service at the First Methodist Church in Silver City will be held at a later date.  Remains will be cremated as per her wishes.  Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Silver City, or the High Desert Humane Society, Silver City.
